For a great family weekend away try Milton near Sydney on the NSW South Coast
On the south side of the eastern coast in New South Wales, Australia, rests the historic town of Milton. Emerging from the early nineteenth century flux of settlement, this coastal town still honours its roots and displays them proudly to visitors from around the world. Though small, Milton still has room to welcome anyone interested in the rural past of Australia.
Anyone visiting the area will be glad to get caught up in the excitement of a fair. There are three major ones here. In March, take part in their Agricultural and Horticultural Show. Like any county fair, tourists will enjoy watching dog and horse shows, displays of livestock, and spinning around in the amusement park. Listen to live music, gape at the brave rodeo riders. The October Settlers Fair also welcomes citizens and guests alike. Hear story-tellers and watch street performers tell tales from the past. Magicians will wow you, while the adventurous might learn a bit about sheep shearing. Find some knick-knacks for Your Own displays at home too. June sees the popular Scarecrow Festival celebrating harvest time with many of the same features as the Settlers Fair, just with lots of colourful examples of scarecrows.
If your timing is right you can take a stroll through the monthly, Saturday market. For four hours each month vendors sell crafts, art and clothing. Find local produce to munch during your travels or to cook back at your self-catering cottage. Also enjoy the many works of art in galleries around the town. Displays of beautiful pieces include pottery and painting representing everything from traditional to modern styles.
Visit Cupitts Winery to sample their wines at the cellar door. If you like their kind of artistry, take some home or back to the cottage for an evening sip over dinner. Otherwise, stay here for a meal. Cupitts serves lunch and an evening meal. The town also hosts a coastal wine festival.
At GZone Flower Farm you will discover that there is always something ready to flower, no matter the season. Come away impressed by the environmental commitment on show here and thorough recycling methods. If you are suitably awed, perhaps show your appreciation by purchasing something in their gift shop.
Put your wallet away for a little while and just get outside. Morton National Park supplies trails for bush walking or mountain climbing. Hike up Pigeon House Mountain. Cool off later with a trip to Lake Conjola where the water is great for sailing, swimming, water skiing or fishing.
Get comfortable in one of many ways when booking accommodation. Familiar options such as a motel or camping are available. Otherwise, consider staying in a guest house, lodge or bed and breakfast. Here you the chance to meet local people. Even set up in a restored heritage home or reproduced pioneer cabin. Your choice could even see you established amidst the tranquility of bush and rain forest.
Ramble through Milton and take note of numerous preserved heritage buildings over a century old. The National Trust lists the town among its other historical towns representing the early days of Australian settlement. If you feel daring, book a tour and wander haunted Milton in search of ghosts.
