World Magazine

Philadelphia Area Granite Company Featured In National Trade Magazine

Akropolis Marble & Granite of Southeast Pennsylvania has been featured in the August 2010 issue of Stone World Magazine. ”A lot of hard work and technical expertise goes into making these intricate projects, and we’re very pleased that Stone World Magazine wanted to write about it.” Said Andy Kamaratos, owner of Akropolis Marble & Granite

Stone World Magazine is in its 26th year of print and is the recognized source of information regarding stone use in architecture and interior design, as well as stone production, distribution, installation and maintenance. They maintain their digital version at www.stoneworld.com. “I think they just wanted to see the Robot cut granite” added Tom Bloh who’s in sales at Akropolis. ”The Robot” refers to Akropolis’s most recent investment in technology that combines an industrial sized diamond saw with water jet technology. The first prototype machine was showcased 5 years ago, and less than two dozen USG Robotics Robo Cut twin table machines exist in the world. It allows Akropolis to cut both quickly and accurately, something that was impossible before saw/jet technology was invented. The article also praises Akropolis on its accomplishments at the Dover Downs Casino, where they created a waterjet-cut floor design that included an enormous 93 foot diameter masterpiece with four subset medallions that were 70 feet apart. A total of 4,000 pieces were fabricated, and the project required no field cutting. ”That job was really challenging, but proved the old adage “measure twice, cut once”, added Kamaratos. At approximately the size of a football field, the tip to tip variance is about 1/16″. Akropolis Marble and Granite www.akropolismarble.com has been in business since 1996, and has built a highly advanced stone fabrication shop to service New Jersey, Eastern Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland. They employ many gifted artisans from the stone industry, and have a professionally staffed showroom on Route 309 in Hatfield, north of the Fort Washington Interchange of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. The stone yard is on site, and is currently stocked with thousands of granite slabs for customers to see.

Dickens, Journalism, and Nationhood: Mapping the World in Household Words

Dickens, Journalism, and Nationhood: Mapping the World in Household Words

$116

Dickens, Journalism, and Nationhood examines Charles Dickens’ weekly family magazine Household Words in order to develop a detailed picture of how the journal negotiated, asserted and simultaneously deconstructed Englishness as a unified (and sometimes unifying) mode of expression. It offers close readings of a wide range of materials that self-consciously focus on the nature of England as well as the relationship between Britain and the European continent, Ireland, and the British colonies. Starting with the representation and classification of identities that took place within the framework of the Great Exhibition of 1851, it suggests that the journal strives for a model of the world in concentric circles, spiraling outward from the metropolitan center of London. Despite this apparent orderliness, however, each of the national or regional categories constructed by the journal also resists and undermines such a clear-cut representation.

Auszug: John Bardeen (May 23, 1908 – January 30, 1991) was an American physicist and electrical engineer, the only person to have won the Nobel Prize in Physics twice: first in 1956 with William Shockley and Walter Brattain for the invention of the transistor; and again in 1972 with Leon Neil Cooper and John Robert Schrieffer for a fundamental theory of conventional superconductivity known as the BCS theory. The transistor revolutionized the electronics industry, allowing the Information Age to occur, and made possible the development of almost every modern electronical device, from telephones to computers to missiles. Bardeen’s developments in superconductivity, which won him his second Nobel, are used in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In 1990, John Bardeen appeared on LIFE Magazine’s list of “100 Most Influential Americans of the Century.” John Bardeen was born in Madison, Wisconsin on May 23, 1908. He was the second son of Dr. Charles Russell Bardeen and Althea Harmer Bardeen. He was one of five children. His father, Charles Bardeen, was Professor of Anatomy and the first Dean of the Medical School of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Althea Bardeen, before marrying, had taught at the Dewey Laboratory School and run an interior decorating business; after marriage she was an active figure in the art world. Bardeen’s talent for mathematics was recognized early. His seventh

”Through the looking-glass”: Magical and misused objects in nineteenth century children’s literature.

$49.99

This thesis uses stories from St. Nicholas magazine, between the years 1873 and 1905, to examine the representation and function of objects in 19th century, children’s fantasy literature. Objects play prominent roles in two dichotomous genres: Marchen (folktales and fairy tales) which first originated as an oral storytelling tradition for peasants and Nonsense stories (Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland , for example), which emerged after America and England’s Industrial Revolutions to entertain children of the new middle class. Both genres developed as a means to empower their audiences.;Marchen stories create a world in which magic already exists. The protagonists gain access to magic objects which allow their individual ascents to power. These magic objects demonstrate enhanced functions. Besides performing their first function, they also perform a magic function. Seven league boots, for example, cushion and protect feet, but also allow the hero to walk seven leagues in a single stride. Magic objects let the hero cheat. He is unbeatable with a Sword of Potency or a Necklace of Strength. He will vanquish the villain, win the princess, and become king. He uses the objects to achieve a change in status and wealth.;Nonsense stories create alternate realities. Protagonists are children who get lured from their world into an alternate realm. They must find their way back home by learning the rules of the new world and how to use its objects. Nonsense objects are juxtaposed, transformed, appropriated, or vivified. Juxtaposition forms relationships between two unrelated objects. Transformation changes objects’ materiality. Appropriation finds new uses for objects. Vivification brings objects to life. The children experience cognitive dissonance when interacting with misused objects. Objects both hinder and help children’s journey, but ultimately mediate the children’s identity quest. Child protagonists leave the alternate world more confident in themselves and their

‘Scuse Me while I Whip This Out: Reflections on Country Singers, Presidents, and Other Troublemakers

$9.99

A collection of twisted takes on what it is to be and live in the world of Kinky.’Scuse Me While I Whip This Out is a collection of twisted takes on life by Kinky Friedman. As always, the Kinkster’s work is witty, wise and wonderful, and reads as if it was written by a slightly ill, modern-day Mark Twain. These pieces taken in their totality represent a wide-ranging new direction for Friedman, building on his already well-established fan base as a mystery writer and musician. In ‘Scuse Me While I Whip This Out Kinky will deal with such subjects as marriage, his pets, hanging out with Joe Heller, Bob Dylan, sleeping at the White House, the Peace Corps, country music, travelling, Americana, cigars, Don Imus, and talent. This mixture may well be the funniest as well as the best non-fiction work he has ever done. Many of the pieces are totally new and have never been published anywhere before. Others have appreared in his vastly successful column in the award-winning Texas Monthly magazine. As hilarious and irreverent as David Sedaris, as dark and passionately twisted as George Carlin- and illustrated by the hermetic genius John Callahan-’Scuse Me While I Whip This Out is destined to be one of the most side-splitting, thought-provoking books on the market today.

Excerpt: Sarah George Bagley (April 19, 1806 1884) Historian Tom Dublin says of Sarah Bagley “she was one of the most important labor leaders in New England during the 1840s. An outspoken advocate of shorter workdays for factory operatives and mechanics, she campaigned tirelessly to make ten hours of labor per day the maximum in Massachusetts. As Sarah campaigned for this cause, she entered a much broader network of reformers in areas of womens rights, communitarianism, abolition, peace, prison reform, and health reform. The activities of Sarah Bagley and her coworkers reveal at once their familiarity with middle-class reform activities, and yet demonstrate the ways in which working people embraced this reform impulse at the same time that they transformed and critiqued some of its key elements. Moreover, Sarahs activities within the labor movement reveal many of the tensions that underlay relations between male and female working people as well as the constraints of gender that female activists had to overcome.” Sarah Bagley was born in New Hampshire to Rhoda Witham and Nathan Bagley, both members of large New England families. Nathan and Rhoda farmed, sold land, and even owned a small mill trying to make money to support their family. She had two brothers, Thomas and Henry, and one sister Mary Osgood. It is also supposed that there was a miscarriage right after Sarah. In 1835, at the age of 28, Bagley first appeared in Lowell, Massachusetts working at the Hamilton Mills. She published one of her first stories Pleasures of Factory Life in an 1840 issue of the Lowell Offering. The Offering was a literary magazine written, edited, and published by working women, some of them very young. Their purpose was to show the world that women who worked could … More:

The shockwave threw him to the ground, and the impact sprained his right arm. A photographer for LIFE magazine, Robert Capa , and Acme News photographer Charles Corte began taking pictures of the shattered Post Office and the carnage lying in the streets. One of the physicians on hand was Brigadier General Edgar Hume whose office was across the street from the post office.References (URLs online) A hyperlinked version of this chapter is at The Air Raid on Bari was an air attack by German bombers on
